real wedding event :: concepts event design

It was a wedding fit for the ages… timeless, elegant, and very much San Diego. The wedding of Lauren and Eric was just that! The wedding ceremony took place at the gorgeous Immaculata Church on the USD campus, the wedding began as a traditional celebration of family and friends.  Yet, the couple, Lauren and Eric, added modern twists with vibrant colors/shades of pink, gold and black.

The reception followed at the Marriott Marquis, located on the San Diego Marina. The colors extended into the reception venue, and with colors in all shades on pink and white, the tented outdoor space turned into magical place where wedding guests could not only enjoy the beautiful San Diego weather, but could enjoy intimacy that the tent offered.  Custom lighting, furniture, and decor were supplied by Concepts Event Design, and all the details, from the gold/black sequins tablecloths, to the gold table and chairs, perfectly paired with the couple’s vibrant, yet regal theme.

The wedding coordination was handled by another Weddings of Distinction vendor, First Comes Love Weddings & Events, and lets just say, we love when our vendors work together!  And, when they work together perfectly, as Concepts Event Design and First Comes Love did, the result is a wedding so beautiful and so fun!

news + press :: may’s meeting at tom hams lighthouse

It was a first for Weddings of Distinction as a group to visit Tom Hams Lighthouse, and while some of us have worked at this beautiful coastal wedding location (and restaurant) with our respective businesses, for many of us it was our first time!

With a seaside theme, entitled “Let’s Fla-mingle,” all decor and florals were provided by wedding florist extraordinaire, Embellishmint Floral & Event Design.   Everything from the flowers, to the tablecloths, to even the desserts, united the theme in shades of pinks, plus golds and creams!  Speaking of desserts, our after-lunch treats were supplied by no other than Sweet Cheeks Baking Co., one of San Diego’s finest dessert and cake bakeries!

These two special wedding vendors not only supplied our networking meeting with decor and desserts, but the two companies took the opportunity to present to the group, elaborating on the scope of their work and sharing some details and info that many of us do not already know!

The day really was great, and despite the “May Gray” typical to San Diego this time of year, every detail came together perfectly.  From service, to location, to decor, to company, we felt pampered at this spectacular bay-front property.  The staff there did a phenomenal job!  And, a little bit a trivia: Tom Ham’s Lighthouse, to this day, is still a functioning lighthouse!  Share that with your friends, or better yet, go visit yourself!

real wedding :: kelly + jodie

Edgy, yet romantic.  Soft, yet modern. Thats the best way to describe the wedding day of Kelly + Jodie. With both the ceremony and reception taking place at the Scripps Seaside Forum, Kelly and Jolie’s wedding included everything perfect about a San Diego wedding: the perfect weather and nearly 360 degrees of ocean views.  Modern details, along with clean and bright colors, complimented the space perfectly, and being as there were many of the couples’  friends and family visiting San Diego from out of town, the entire evening went off without a hitch!

Two of Weddings of Distinction’s special wedding vendors participated in the special day, with Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. providing the teal-colored, tiered wedding cake, and Carmin Cermak coordinating the wedding flowers and floral arrangements in shades of white with gold highlights.  Needless to say: perfection all around!

stephanie + guy :: real wedding at sea grove park / private residence

Not all weddings have to be large in scale.  Some have a few guests; some take place in a hotel; and others utilize mere creative locations and details.  The wedding of Stephanie and Guy describes the latter.  With the ceremony at Sea Grove Park in beautiful Del Mar, the couple may have kept the guest list small, but the details and the decor definitely made a large statement.

Specialty wedding rental vendor, Concepts Event Design, provided the couple with all the chairs, tables and more that they needed in order to create this pop-up wedding location.  After the ceremony, Concepts decorated the unique reception location, which happened to be at a friend’s private residence in La Jolla.

Market string, lantern lighting, along with vibrant, bright colors, graced the home’s outdoor area, and tables and lines turned the space into a romantic and private wedding reception.

real wedding :: stephanie + matthew

It was a the perfect fall day, but in San Diego, it always feels like summer.  The outdoor wedding of Stephanie and Matthew took place at the beautiful Hilton San Diego Bayfront, in one of the hotel’s outdoor gardens.  The colors were blush , ivory and white, and against the backdrop of San Diego’s vibrant Bay, the ceremony was romantic as it was elegant.

The reception followed, not at the Hilton, but at the Westgate Hotel in the nearby Gaslamp District.  The couple, in true fairy-tale fashion, made the few mile trek to the reception location via no other than, a horse carriage!  Thanks to Always & Forever Carriage Company, Stephanie and Matthew kept the romantic spirit of their ceremony alive, and arrived to their reception to party the night away.

Thanks to the coordinating efforts of Carmin Cermak, all the details of the multi-location wedding had to be timed perfectly.  And, of course, it was!  Carmin also worked to coordinate the florals, which in line with the bride’s colors of blush, ivory and white, were soft and romantic.

The wedding cake was provided by Sweet Cheeks Baking Company.  The cake was a classic, 4-tiered masterpiece, and just like this beautiful couple, it has elements that were romantic and whimsical.

news + press :: march’s meeting at bernardo winery

Just when we think our meetings can’t get any better, we go to a winery, the Bernardo Winery to be exact, and we completely out-do ourselves!   To sum March’s meeting up: outdoor luncheon, historic charm, and of course, wine!!

While admittedly it was hard to focus (:)), there were two, very informative speakers this month: the first, Marc Lehman from Emotion Picture Studio.  His company has transformed into so much more than just videotaping weddings.  Emotion Picture Studio works with a couples’ budget, and they not only offer professionally-manned coverage, but they’ve developed a service that sends cameras to a couple for them to distribute and use on their own, and then once returned, the Studio edits and creates the final memories.  Convenient and innovative, for sure!

Following Marc, we heard from Shannon Henry & Janine Abdallah (who manage marketing for the Weddings of Distinction) about Facebook Targeted Ads.  Albeit a brief synopsis, they offered the group a lot of information, that in turn, can be used to promote individual businesses.

When it came to lunch, it was a pretty warm, sunny day, s0 lunch was served in one of the vineyard’s outdoor pavilions.  The combination of the shade of the gazebo, the view of the vineyards, and the old-world charm that transports you back to the 1800s, made this afternoon one of our more memorable lunches!  After all presentations were presented, lunch was served, the group was escorted through the Winery.  We learned about it’s history (many of us didn’t know that Bernardo Winery is Southern California’s oldest operating winery); we toured the grounds, and, of course, had a tasting!  It’s a tough job; someone has to do it! 😉

news + press :: february’s meeting at the bali hai restaurant

It was a perfect afternoon on the water, and with February’s networking meeting graciously hosted by the Bali Hai Restaurant, we had amazing views of the San Diego Bay Harbor.  We dined outside, underneath the restaurant’s “Hawaiian Village” outdoor pavilion.  It was just the right amount of space for our rather large group, and with spectacular views of the Bay and downtown San Diego, it almost doesn’t seem fair that our meetings are part of “work!”

We heard from one of our new members, Stephanie, from A Perfect Table.  They specialize in, as may be deduced, table decor, but what she and her company offer is really so much more.  She works with the couple, determines their vision and style, and then coordinates with the florists, planners, and caterers to make the reception tables absolutely perfect!

We concluded the luncheon with a presentation from The Knot Magazine.  The Southern CA rep told the group about the publicity they offer advertisers, as well as the benefits of working with the nation’s leading wedding planning magazine.

In the end, we hated to leave the San Diego sunshine and have to go back to the office, but this month’s meeting was not only enjoyable but informative!

news + press :: september’s meeting at la jolla women’s club

Sometimes last minute changes are a good thing, and in September, the last minute change to have the monthly meeting hosted by the La Jolla Women’s Club proved to be one of those instances. Nestled in the heart of the the village of La Jolla, the Women’s Club boasts some beautiful garden landscapes coupled with tons historic charm, and all with an ocean view… Talk about a perfect location for a San Diego wedding!

We networked and mingled on the Club’s terrace, where we enjoyed small appetizers and fresh lemonade.  Then, we dined in the Club’s main hall, with a delicious late summer meal provided by Crown Point Catering: fresh summer salad, followed by another 3 courses!  We handled some important logistical matters, like the upcoming Board (re)elections, and enjoyed the company of one another in a truly beautiful and historic San Diego location. If you haven’t been there, it is definitely worth a visit.  Stroll through the gardens; make your way to the beach; and if a wedding is in your future, contact them for details and information!

a year in review :: 2014

What a year 2014 was! There was change; there was loss, and, we imagine, like many organizations and groups, Weddings of Distinction dealt with its share of curveballs.

We began the year with high hopes and big plans. The board in 2014 was the same as in 2013, so the consistency in leadership helped keep the group on course for the plans in place.

However, in March, our small group got an unexpected and sudden shock: the death of WoD President, Bob Brichmann. As President, Bob was an integral part of the group, but as a long-standing WoD member, he was also a friend and trusted wedding vendor. Bob did so much, and he knew as a member since WoD’s inception, he understood the inner workings of our non-profit. His death came so suddenly, and in many ways, left the group in a state of confusion.

Yet, it was as a result of this tragic event, that the resiliency of the group and its members prevailed. Board members reshuffled responsibilities, and normalcy soon returned. By the middle to end of 2014, great things returned to WoD, just as Bob would have wanted.

In March, we partnered up with another San Diego-based wedding group, NACE, and had a joint luncheon. Many of our WoD members are also members of NACE, so the combination of vendors allowed for ample opportunities to network.

Also in 2014 was the chance to explore other venue and locations that are newer to the wedding industry, i.e. the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. As a group, we traveled to the Wild Animal Park in October, and many of us were astounded with the space, the possibilities and the potential! Who would have thought that use a space like the park for wedding, but based on the luncheon they hosted for us, it truly is an amazing wedding space.

Weddings of Distinction is a non-profit networking group, and the groups ultimate focus is on its members and the opportunity to network. 2014 was a stellar year in that regard. We welcomed many new vendors, and said goodbye to a few. Those remaining into 2015 continue to be among the best in the wedding industry!

What to expect from us in 2015….a new board. Beginning January 1, the new governing board is:

What’s really great is that many in the new board are new members and/or new to leadership. This transition should bring a fresh perspective to the group!

All in all, while 2014 was difficult in many ways, the tests and tribulations have brought about a stronger group and one more willing to protect the integrity of our special affiliation.

Weddings of Distinction members are special. We all work hard, and as many of us realized at the holiday party this month, we all play hard, too.   Our members know and trust that membership in the group means we all are among the best in the industry, but what’s truly special, is that we all truly enjoy each others company outside the job. Friends and vendors…no matter what may happen, Weddings of Distinction will remain the same and remain as strong. After all, that’s what Bob Brichmann would have wanted.  So, going into 2015 and beyond, that is what we intend to stay!

real weddings :: greg and rachel

Rachel and Greg decided on a La Jolla wedding at the La Valencia Hotel, a gorgeous wedding venue with decor dating back to the 1920’s. They chose wedding planner Cynthia, of Cynthia Zatkin Events, to coordinate their wedding day. Wedding photographer Shannon Henry, of True Photography and Studio Carre’, captured the details of their day exquisitely. Wedding musicians Sterling Strings created ambiance for the ceremony and cocktail hour and wedding DJ Bob Brichmann, of Artistic Productions, entertained the guests and had the dance floor packed for the entire night. Rachel chose a beautiful muted color scheme of taupe’s and ivory’s and received high marks from her bridesmaids by choosing a BCBG cocktail dress for their bridesmaid dresses.
