real weddings:: jessica and matt

For their wedding at the beautiful Estancia La Jolla, Jessica & Matt chose San Diego Weddings of Distinction members Studio Carré Photographie, Rae Florae, and newest member Concepts Event Design, to create, color, and capture their wedding. Jessica & Matt decided in favor of the pre-ceremony sneak peek, so Shannon Henry of Studio Carré was able to catch a few special moments of the two sharing the love and anticipation for the day. From the bouquets to the garden ceremony and reception, Rae Florae– Cultivated Floral Design, crafted a color palette that spanned soft silvery grey to fresh raspberry and grass green. Dahlias, hydrangea, calla lilies, and orchids were everywhere you looked. Concepts Event Design completed the event with their posh lounge for relaxed mingling and decadent pin-tuck linens in every color. All was coordinated by the awesome team over at Liz Beck Events! Best wishes to Jessica & Matt!!

tips from the pros :: smaller more intimate weddings

Written by Cynthia Zatkin Events

With the economic downturn, 2009 was the year of the small wedding and I have to say that I have come to really like them. The majority of my brides, this past year, have planned weddings in the 50-100 person range. I have definitely coordinated some that were larger and even had one that was smaller, but the norm hovered around that number.

You get a bigger bang for your buck with a smaller wedding for sure. I have seen my clients invest more money into food, florals, linens, and fun extras like photo booths, cigar stations, espresso bars, and even an on-site mini-donut vendor because they felt like they could spend a little extra when they didn’t need as much of any one item (50 people = 5 table linens v. 20 for a 200 person wedding).
I think 50 people is really the critical mass needed to have dancing at a wedding. With that number, you can fill the dance floor and feel the energy of a crowd.

Small weddings can definitely go “big.”

Steal this idea:
Over Thanksgiving weekend, I coordinated a wedding for only 40 people and it was a wonderful, very intimate affair. The bridal couple, Kathryn & Michel, wanted to spend time with each of their guests and therefore decided to sit with a different table for each course. They had their reception staff set (5) tables with (10) chairs each but only assaigned (8) guests per table. Kathryn & Michel opted for a drawn out 5-course meal and shifted to the empty seats at each table each time a new course was served. I thought the idea was brilliant! Only with a group of their size, could such a idea be possible. And their guests felt incredibly honored by it!

The William D. Evans sternwheeler at The Bahia Resort was the scene of our latest WoD outing. What a treat! It’s such a beautifully historic boat. The stain-glassed 2nd deck ceiling is gorgeous. Many thanks to the catering ladies – Susan, Kristin and Kelly and the banquet staff for providing a delicious meal and wonderful visit.

Special thanks go out to WoD member Lois Mathews of Lois Mathews Design for the creative table décor. Beautiful candles, baubles and peacock feathers!

Guests for the day included coordinator Carmin Cermak of Carmin Designs, Fred Alderete from Concepts Event Design and little baby Axel – WoD member Cynthia Zatkin’s newest addition to her family. Also welcomed to the group were new members Sara Sargent, catering manager from the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort and Spa , Haydee and Fred Alderete, owners of Concepts Event Design and Kristina Chartier of Kristina Chartier Photography

Our two showcasers for the day were coordinator Ann Strobel from Ann’s Plans and Meleah , hair & make-up stylist, 1st dance instructor, image consultant and more. Thank you ladies for sharing your talents with the group.

Board members shared group business and announcements with all. Thank you Ann for the generous raffle prize. A few testimonials were shared. Birthdays were acknowledged. Many, many referrals were exchanged and, as we do each month, networking was enjoyed by all.

We’ll see you March 23 at Humphrey’s On The Bay!
